Dutasteride produces gradual, progressive results for BPH, its only FDA-approved indication, and for hair loss, where it is prescribed off-label. For hair loss, most patients begin noticing changes at 3-6 months, with peak results at 12-24 months. An initial shedding phase in the first 1-3 months is common and is a positive indicator of treatment response. Results require continuous use to maintain.
Hair Loss Results Overview
In a 153-man randomised Phase III trial, dutasteride 0.5 mg daily increased hair count by a mean of 12.2 hairs/cm² at 6 months, against 4.7 hairs/cm² on placebo (P = .0319). In a separate 917-man randomised trial, dutasteride 0.5 mg increased hair count and hair width significantly more than finasteride 1 mg at 24 weeks (P = .003). Every published randomised trial of oral dutasteride for hair loss ended at 24 weeks or 6 months, so figures beyond that point are not established by trial data.
