Dutasteride Dosage Guide

The standard dose of dutasteride is 0.5 mg taken orally once daily, with or without food. This is the FDA-approved dose for bph/">benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and the most commonly prescribed dose for off-label hair loss treatment. Dutasteride capsules should be swallowed whole, not crushed, chewed or opened, because contact with the capsule contents can irritate the lining of the mouth and throat.

Standard Dose: 0.5 mg Once Daily

The 0.5 mg dose is the only commercially available strength and is used for both BPH and off-label hair loss. It can be taken at any time of day, with or without food. Consistency in timing helps maintain steady drug levels, though dutasteride’s extremely long half-life (approximately 5 weeks) makes this less critical than with shorter-acting medications. Full 0.5 mg dosing details.

Twice-Weekly and Reduced-Frequency Dosing

Due to dutasteride’s long half-life, reduced-frequency dosing (2-3 times per week) is prescribed off-label for hair loss. In a 2025 randomised pilot study of 60 men, twice-weekly and thrice-weekly dutasteride both increased hair density and diameter over 24 weeks. The comparator in that trial was daily finasteride 1 mg, not daily dutasteride, so it does not establish what a reduced-frequency schedule costs against taking dutasteride every day. Full guide to twice-weekly dosing.

Hair Loss-Specific Dosing

For hair loss, the published trials used 0.5 mg daily. Two reduced-frequency approaches are prescribed in practice: starting daily and dropping to 3x/week after 6-12 months, or starting at 3x/week for patients concerned about side effects. Neither has been compared with daily dutasteride in a randomised trial. Full hair loss dosing guide.

What If You Miss a Dose?

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and continue with your regular schedule. Do not take a double dose to make up for the missed one. Due to the long half-life, missing a single dose has minimal impact on drug levels. More on missed doses.

Important Administration Notes

  • Swallow capsules whole; the contents can irritate the lining of the mouth and throat
  • Pregnant women or women who may become pregnant should not handle broken or leaking capsules
  • Store at room temperature (25°C / 77°F); excursions permitted to 15-30°C (59-86°F)
  • Do not use if capsules are cracked or leaking

⚠️ Contraindicated in Pregnancy: Dutasteride can cause abnormalities of the external genitalia in male fetuses. Women who are pregnant or who may become pregnant must not take dutasteride or handle crushed or broken capsules, because dutasteride is absorbed through the skin. If contact with a leaking capsule occurs, wash the area immediately with soap and water. Dutasteride’s long half-life (~5 weeks) means it remains in the body for months after the last dose.
