Dutasteride Results After 1 Year

Dutasteride is prescribed off-label for hair loss. The randomised trials that support it ran to 24 weeks or 6 months and showed hair count and thickness still improving when they stopped; what happens between 6 and 12 months has not been measured in a controlled trial of oral dutasteride. In practice, most patients at one year report stabilised or still-improving results.

What to Expect at 12 Months

After one year of consistent dutasteride 0.5 mg daily, most patients have experienced:

  • Complete resolution of the initial shedding phase (typically resolved by month 3-4)
  • Measurable increase in hair count and density
  • Visibly thicker hair shafts
  • Improved scalp coverage, particularly at the vertex
  • Stabilization of further hair loss

Beyond Year 1

Beyond one year there is no controlled trial data for oral dutasteride in hair loss; reports of continued modest improvement through 18 to 24 months come from clinical practice. After that point the benefit of continued treatment is maintenance. Discontinuation reverses the gains as DHT returns to baseline, and because dutasteride stays detectable in serum for 4 to 6 months after the last dose, that reversal is gradual.
