Dutasteride is FDA-approved for bph/">benign prostatic hyperplasia only, and no topical dutasteride product is FDA-approved at any strength, so this is off-label use of a compounded preparation. It must be obtained through a compounding pharmacy with a valid prescription. Compounding pharmacies prepare custom topical formulations by dissolving dutasteride in a vehicle at the prescribed concentration (typically 0.01-0.1%). FDA states that compounded drugs are not FDA-approved and that it does not verify their safety, effectiveness or quality before they are marketed. Do not attempt to make topical dutasteride at home by opening oral capsules.
How Compounding Pharmacies Make It
Licensed compounding pharmacies dissolve pharmaceutical-grade dutasteride powder in a vehicle optimized for scalp absorption. Common vehicles include transcutol (diethylene glycol monoethyl ether), propylene glycol, and ethanol-based solutions. The pharmacist is responsible for the accuracy of the concentration and for the conditions the preparation is made under. FDA notes that drugs compounded by a licensed pharmacist in a state-licensed pharmacy under section 503A of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act are not subject to current good manufacturing practice requirements, and that state boards of pharmacy have primary day-to-day oversight of those pharmacies.
Why You Should Not DIY
- Dosing accuracy: Oral capsules contain dutasteride in a gel matrix not designed for topical use. Extracting and diluting it cannot produce accurate, consistent concentrations.
- Absorption: The gel matrix in oral capsules is not optimized for skin penetration. Compounding pharmacies use specialized vehicles.
- Contamination risk: Homemade preparations risk bacterial contamination.
- Safety: Pregnant women or women who may become pregnant must not contact dutasteride. Proper handling requires pharmaceutical safeguards.
